Pouilly-Fuisse Premier Cru: Gilles Guerrin Sur La Roche

The region of Burgundy, also known as Bourgogne, has a rich and opulent history. In the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, the Grand Duchy of Burgundy reached as far as Belgium and the North Sea, becoming renowned for its riches, culture, and wine. Building on vineyards planted by the Romans and later cultivated by medieval monks, the region established a winemaking legacy that endures today. Despite being geographically small, Burgundy produces some of the most expensive and sought-after wines in the world, its limestone soils lending them a uniquely appetising minerality that sets a Burgundy apart from its peers.

The top tier of the Pouilly-Fuisse appellation in southern Burgundy's Maconnais, Pouilly-Fuissé Premier Cru was finally recognised in 2020 after years of campaigning by local growers. The classification covers 22 delimited climats across the four villages of Chaintre, Fuisse, Solutre-Pouilly, and Vergisson, spanning around 194 hectares - roughly a fifth of the appellation's output. Made exclusively from Chardonnay on the finest limestone and clay slopes, these wines are the most concentrated and age-worthy expressions of Pouilly-Fuisse. Typically oak-aged, they show golden apple, white flowers, and warm spice, with the structure and minerality to rival wines from the Cote d'Or.
