Beaujolais Villages
This is the appellation located in the north west of the Beaujolais region, outside of the main Cru villages, which represents 25% of Beaujolais's total production. Created in 1950, this encompasses 39 villages where wines are more complex and full bodied, due to the terroir around the villages being much more hilly, and the soil being sandier and more granite-based.
Each of the 39 communes can use the 'villages' title, which indicates the higher quality, providing the wine is made only from grapes grown within their commune.
